The Definition of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome is the unexpected death of a baby less than one year of age. Officials make this decision after an autopsy, examining the area where the baby died and checking the baby's health records.  When an infant dies of S.I.D.S., it isn’t anyone’s fault. A S.I.D.S. death is considered to be a death of natural causes.

National and Georgia Statistics for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome

Approximately 2,500 infants die each year from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome in the United States. In Georgia, 158 infants died in 2009.

Facts About S.I.D.S.

No one knows what causes S.I.D.S. Babies seem healthy but die unexpectedly, usually during sleep.

  • Most S.I.D.S. babies die in the fall and winter months

  • More male babies die than female babies

  • African-American babies are 2 times more likely to die than Caucasian babies

  • The majority of infants who die were in an unsafe sleep environment

Safe Sleep Environments

  • Position the baby on his back to sleep for naps and nighttime rest

  • Place babies on a firm mattress in a safe crib

  • Set the temperature control between 65 to 85 degrees

  • Do not place fluffy blankets, crib bumpers, pillows or toys near a sleeping infant

  • Do not expose babies to smoke

  • Don't place infants on couches, waterbeds or beanbags to sleep

  • Place a tight fitting sheet on the crib mattress

  • Blankets should never cover the baby's face or head

You CAN Reduce The Risk!

Putting a baby to sleep on her back at naptime and at night, creating and using a safe sleep area for your baby and not smoking near your baby are the 3 most important things that you can do to reduce your infants' risk for S.I.D.S.

IN MEMORY

Garrett Roosevelt Glover. Garrett died of S.I.D.S. on May 11, 2000.  Garrett was a perfectly healthy, 11 week old baby who died peacefully in his sleep, 8 hours after his 2 month check up. His spirit lives on and his legacy gives life to the risk reduction and bereavement support efforts that Garrett’s Voice offers. His legacy lives on in all of us who continue to share his angelic story.
